End of the Year Book Survey 2012

best books read in 2012

1. Best Book You Read In 2012?
UGH I can't just pick one! I'll do a 'Top 10' list later... or maybe a Top 15!

2. Book you were excited about and thought you were going to love more but didn't?
I was so excited to read both The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer and Harbinger but unfortunately I didn't completely love either. I'm still going to try The Evolution of Mara Dyer though!

3. Most surprising (in a good way!) book of 2012?
The endings of both Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver and A Million Suns  by Beth Revis, like are you serious right now?! Mind=blown. I need the next books! AH!

4. Book you recommended to people most in 2012?
The Fault in Our Stars  by John Green and Graffiti Moon by Cath Crowley

Shatter Me (Shatter Me, #1)5. Best series you discovered in 2012?
There's so many awesome series I discovered this year, so I'll pick an older series that I finally read in 2012...The Iron Fey series by Julia Kagawa! I know I was late to jump on the 'Fey Train' but oh my goodness these books are great! I still have The Iron Knight to read, but I'm so excited to see things from Ash's point of view!

6. Favorite new authors you discovered in 2012?
      F. Scott Fitzgerald, Tahereh Mafi, Beth Revis and Julia Kagawa.

7. Best book that was out of your comfort zone or was a new genre for you?
I usually don't like Sci-Fi, but Across the Universe (and A Million Suns) was absolutely incredible and now one of my all-time favorites! I also started to read more out of the YA genre and finally read The Great Gatsby and LOVED it, definitely recommend!

8. Most thrilling, unputdownable book in 2012?
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. Seriously I started that book around four in the afternoon and didn't stop until I was done, so about two in the morning. I also had the hardest time putting down A Million Suns (Across the Universe 2) it was just one shocker after another... then the ending! AHH!

9. Book you read in 2012 that you are most likely to re-read next year?
I found so many books this year that I absolutely adore, but most definitely The Fault in Our Stars, Shatter Me and Pandemonium. I want to refresh my brain on the last two for the next in the series in 2013 and TFiOS is just incredible!

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2012?
I really enjoyed Beauty Queens by Libba Bray and Cinder by Marissa Marr's covers best! They were both so unique and fit perfectly in with the stories.

11. Most memorable character in 2012?
Beauty Queens        Cinder from Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles) she was such a 'cool' cyborg and it was so fun to be able to connect with her despite her metal limbs! Another would be Juliette from Shatter Me her strength and unique talent definitely has stuck with me!

12. Most beautifully written book read in 2012?
I feel like I just keep repeating John Green's The Fault in Our Stars so I'm going to list other books that were beautifully written too! Shatter Me, Why We Broke Up, Across the Universe, Pandemonium and I know I'm forgetting some!

13. Book that had the greatest impact on you in 2012?
Either Across the Universe/A Million Suns or/and The Great Gatsby. I loved how in AtU and in AMS after I was done reading it had me applying aspects from the book to real life and left me questioning everyday life and governmental stuff. Gatsby because of how social class and 'the American Dream' is discussed. Also Gatsby reaching for that green light is forever imprinted into my mind, such an amazing symbol.

14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2012 to finally read?
Across the Universe, The Great Gatsby, The Near Witch and The Iron Fey series!

15. Favorite passage/quote from a book you read in 2012?
"That the thing about pain...it demands to be felt." The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.

16. Shortest and longest book you read in 2012?
Shortest I think would be A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness and longest I believe is The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer.

The Fault in Our Stars17. Book that had a scene in it that had you reeling and dying to talk to somebody about it?
The very last scene/ sentence in Pandemonium I'm so lucky to have Bree's Books to talk to/ fangirl with about these amazing books and how these cliffhangers will be the end of us! We are dying to get our hands on Requiem! 2013 bring it on!

18. Favorite relationship from a book you read in 2012? (Be it romantic, friendship, etc.)
It's a group of three: Hazel, Augustus and Isaac. I loved the friendship between the three and of course the relationship between Hazel and Augustus. I don't want to give anything away, but I loved how open the three were with each other and how they never judged, I'd kill for a friend like that.

19. Favorite book you read in 2012 from an author you read previously?
I read The Series of Unfortunate Events when I was younger by Lemony Snicket (Daniel Handler) and I was totally shocked to find out that he wrote Why We Broke Up! I loved it so much and it was awesome to see him write such a completely different book from his middle grade series.

20. Best book you read that you read based SOLELY on a recommendation from someone else?
Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler. It's actually quite funny because Kare (Epic Book Nerd) didn't tell me what she thought of it and just said to read it and we'll talk about it. I'm so glad she said that because I went into this book with no prior opinions and it's just such a unique and amazingly written book that you'll either love or hate the narrator I think. I'm so grateful Kare had me read this one, Thanks Kare!

  1. Haha, I'm so glad I have YOU to discuss (or more like fangirl) with. Especially with Oliver's books. Can you believe the more I think about it and the longer I must wait for Requiem, the more I kind of sort of dislike Pandemonium? Idk, I think I'm just getting way too impatient.

And I'm glad you liked Across the Universe! It was a bit of a letdown for me, but I'm still hoping to continue reading the series.

Here's to hoping another great year in books is ahead! :)

  3. I love reading these book surveys, they're the best! :D And WHEW, finally one where I don't have to feel totally guilty for not having read tons of the books ;) I'm so so SO glad you loved TFiOS! 'Cause like... that book. I was such an emotional MESS the whole time I was reading it and there were just all these flutter-y feelings inside of me... LOL you know what I mean, right? I don't sound too crazy?

And okay, Pandemonium. Delirium was one of my favourites last year (LAUREN OLIVER <3333) but I STILL HAVEN'T READ Pandemonium. Which is even more horrible because I'm pretty sure I chose it as my most anticipated of 2012 on this very survey last year :P Ah well. Someday I will be ready to have my heart carved out and handed back to me!

    Awesome post, Katie! <3

  4. What, Lemony Snicket wrote Why We Broke Up!? I had no idea, but now I definitely want to read it; love his sense of humor. I read the Great Gatsby for the first time this year, too-- it was pretty amazing. I really want to see the new movie.

Glad you loved The Fault In Our Stars so much-- I did, too. Graffiti Moon, Why We Broke Up, and Cinder are all going on my tbr list. Thanks for for so many awesome recommendations and a great post. :)
