Review: Delirium by Lauren Oliver

HarperTeen
February 1, 2011

Before scientists found the cure, people thought love was a good thing. They didn’t understand that once love -the deliria- blooms in your blood, there is no escaping its hold. Things are different now. Scientists are able to eradicate love, and the governments demands that all citizens receive the cure upon turning eighteen. Lena Holoway has always looked forward to the day when she’ll be cured. A life without love is a life without pain: safe, measured, predictable, and happy.
But with ninety-five days left until her treatment, Lena does the unthinkable: She falls in love.

There's been so much positive buzz surrounding Lauren Oliver's latest release, Delirium, that I jumped at the advanced reader's copy. I started this book the night I was approved for the galley and finished shorty after. I was only a couple sentences into Delirium when I knew that this book was going to be absolutely amazing.

Lauren Oliver's writing is genius. It's extremely powerful and focused on emotions. I found myself having to wipe my eyes multiple times during this book. Her descriptions are flawless and the character development is perfection. It was so easy to get lost in Lena's world and put yourself in her shoes. Delirium has everything I could possibly ask for in a book: action, romance, friendship and adventure.

I completely adored Lena. At first I was a little annoyed at how set in her ways she was, but when she started to open her eyes to all the possibilities is when I really appreciated her. There's a Lena in all of us. She's a little lost, a tad rebellious and completely courageous. Lena is a breath of fresh air to the young adult genre.

Alex. What can I say about Alex other than he was perfect? I guess I could say Alex was just what Lena needed. He opened her eyes to such an amazing new world. He was funny, strong and an amazing listener. Then there's Hana, Lena's best friend, who is quirky and fiercely protective. I feel as if these characters' were a part of me. I became so close to each of them while reading Delirium.

The ending... Oh my goodness the ending! I definitely did not see it coming at all! It was the perfect lead in for Pandemonium, which I cannot be released soon enough!

Amazing Quote:
"I have a secret. It will kill me. And I don't care."

Characters: 5/5
Creativity: 5/5
Voice: 5/5
Plot: 5/5
Impact: 5/5
Overall: 5/5

Note: This book deserves way more than only 5 stars! Delirium is on a whole other level than anything I've ever read. By far my favorite book of all time.

Lauren Oliver is one of the greatest writers of our time. You would be absolutely crazy not to pick up this writing masterpiece. I could go on forever will all the positive things to say about this book. You'll laugh, cry and discover some things about yourself along the way. Delirium will be released on February 1, 2011. The first thing anyone should do on this date is head to a bookstore and buy this book... along with a box of tissues.

Blogger Interview: Elodie from Once Upon a Quote

I recently came across a new young adult book blog titled Once Upon A Quote. I immediately fell in love with Elodie's reviews and quirky personality. Elodie lives in France and is studying English in college. How awesome?! I just had to contact her and ask if she would have time to give Call Me Crazy Reviews an interview. Luckily she said yes!

1)
What made you decide to start a young adult book blog?
Actually, I had always wanted to have a place that belongs completely to me and where I could express my thoughts the way I wanted them to be expressed. And since I read a lot of them (YA BOOKS), a young adult book blog seemed perfect to me...
But, I have to say that I've created this blog mostly thanks to a friend of mine whose name is Marie over at If Mary Books, I love her blog and I wanted to do my reviews, my IMM ... just like her!! Marie and I only met in October but it feels like we've known each other longer than that!! We have a lot in common and I think that's what enables us to be this close even though we've only known each other two months. So thank you Marie ;) I owe you!! (By the way, do not under any circumstances quote what I've written here in front of me.)

2) Can you give us 3 words that describe you/ your personality?
Well, I would say that I am very clumsy: I think it's one of the first thing you notice when you see me (I fall ... a lot, I break glasses all the time, I'm stumble on words quite a bit.

Then, I am someone who is very enthusiastic and I like being this way! It's great being always excited by anything, well it's way better than sulking all the time.
To finish, I have an addicted personality : I'm addicted to coffee, books, English, my boyfriend, my elf bookmark, my friends. If someone told me that I would be deprived of one of these things forever, I think my life would lose it's meaning (Yeah, I may be overacting for my bookmark and the coffee, but otherwise it's true.)
(Elf bookmark?! Awesome!)

3) How about 3 words that describe your blog?
Hmm, my blog is banal (I mean, you can find thousands like it), but it's also unique (because everybody is unique and special in their own way, you'll never find 2 blogs that are exactly alike). And what can I say? I could say, my blog is awesome, go take a look but it wouldn't be true... my blog is MINE and that's what matter !!

4)
Are there any upcoming reviews, memes, or events that we can look forward to at Once Upon a Quote?
Well, I'll be participating to the 2011 Debut Author Challenge (organized by the Story Siren), then I'd like to join the YA Historical Fiction challenge.I'm looking forward to beginning these challenges, it's going to be great!! And I can't wait to have my first giveaway, which I would like to do when I hit 50 followers: it will be an international giveaway with one or two books to win ! =)
(woot!)

5)
Other than reading and blogging, what other hobbies do you have?
Woah, tough question!! I'm kidding! I'm like every girl of my age, I guess... I like to hang out with my friends and my boyfriend, go to movies (the last one that I've seen was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and it was GREAT), I go to parties (but I'm not a great dancer, I'm clumsy, remember?) I love watching American soap operas ( hat would I do without you guys ? French TV shows suck...)
(Yay to Harry Potter!)

6) What literary character do you feel is most like you?
I'm going to compare myself to YA characters because I can't see another way to answer to your question. Okay I've been watching my bookshelf for almost 20 minutes and I'm ready. The literary character who, I think, is most like me is Nora Grey (from Becca Fitzpatrick's novels).
She's not an outstanding character: she's just this normal girl who copes with her situation as she can and she's "human" (she feels anger, sadness, jealousy ... ). I may feel very related to her because I am reading Crescendo but I don't know, there's something about this girl, it's very easy for me to identify myself to Nora.
(ohh I LOVE that answer!)

7)
Your blog name is Once Upon a Quote (which I LOVE that title!) So what is your all time favorite quote?
I don't have A favorite quote and I think I never will. So I'm going to give you a quote of John Keats that I loved (it's a very famous one) "A thing of beauty is a joy forever: its loveliness increases; it will never pass into nothingness."
And then, I'm going to give you a sentence I can't stop to think about, I think that will be my quote of the week, it's a quote from Last Sacrifice (the last book of the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead) that I've read this morning in a teaser for the book!! I'm so excited about this one: "It's okay if you marry my brother." It will make no sense if you haven't read the series, but when I've read this I was so excited, I still am!!! (I hope it's not a spoiler for you, I haven't read Last Sacrifice yet, I've just seen this quote in a teaser as I just said).
(I adore that John Keats quote!)

8) You recently wrote a review for Nightshade by Andrea Cremer for your blog. I just *have* to ask. Team Shay or Team Ren?
It's a hard one, I love them both, not for the same reasons though. Ren is THE bad boy of the book, and I love that kind of character but there are some things about him that bother me: he's too self-assured and he's even a little sexist. But it's a great character : provocative, sexy... However, there's nothing about Shay that I don't like ... so I guess that means I'm TEAM Shay !!!
(Shay's such a cutie pie)

The Who, What When, Where, Why and Hows'

Who: is you literary crush?
It's definitely Dimitri Belikov from the Vampire Academy series! I've fallen in love with this character as soon as I read the first book, he's such "a badass"!! I've even started to take Russian classes thanks to this character... Yeah I know, I'm pathetic =) ! But I strongly advise you to read the VA series if you haven't already, you'll love him, trust me !!
(Russian classes? Sweet! I really need to read this series!)

What: What is your all time favorite book ?

I haven't A favorite book . I'm so sorry not to answer your questions correctly, I'm such a bad guest. (Psh you're truly awesome!)
I'm going to give you my all time favorite series if that's okay : Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead and The Mortal instruments by Cassandra Clare!
(swoon, Jace is amazing!)

When: When did you really start reading young adult books?
I think that was three years ago ... Oh my god, that is going to sound ridiculous! The first YA book that I've read was Twilight by Stephenie Meyer (in French) . It's really after having read that book, that I've began to read a lot! But I read a lot of YA books since I've began to read in English because there's a lot more choices and covers are gorgeous! You're so lucky !
(Twilight brought me into YA too)

Where: Earlier this week you had told me that you're French! How Awesome! So my question is, how has it been meeting fellow book lovers from all over the world?
It's Awesome! We are so lucky to be able to communicate easily, it's one of the reasons why I love the Internet so much! Being able to talk with Americans, Australians, Canadians... is a wonderful thing for me since I'm studying English at College, it enables me to improve my level faster and I love discovering what life is like in your country! The most awesome thing of all is the fact that I can speak about books with you guys!!
(Agreed!)

Why: For me books offer a wonderful escape from reality. Why do you think you love books so much?
I love reading mainly because, like you, it's a way of forgetting everything around me and escape from reality. I love beginning a new book and meeting new characters, discovering a new world and see how the author is going to use all this and create a great story and a bond between you and his characters. You've got a feeling when you first a read a book and you are crazy about it and it's a wonderful feeling (excitement+curiosity+joy ... ), when I read a book, this is what I'm seeking!!
I like your quote so much that I'm going to create one with it : When I'm reading, I don't want to have butterflies in my stomach, I want pterodactyls. LOL, that doesn't sound half as good, that sounded better in my head, sorry!
(Said perfectly! Love your new quote by the way!)

How: How did you come up with that amazing blog title?
Amazing? Thanks! I was very surprised it wasn't already used, so I was very glad!! Actually, I came up with this title one night when I was thinking of how I would like my blog to look like, what could be it's main feature. And I thought that it would be great if I could keep all my favourites quotes of a book and do my reviews with some of them ... (Beside I love fairy tales hence the "Once upon" formula).

I would like to add : Thank you so much Katie for having me participate in your guest post, I had a lot of fun and it was really nice of you!! Merci beaucoup ;)

"What is your favorite book cover?"
This is a difficult question for me. I just love so many different covers. These two are my favorites for this moment you could say.

I love the simplicity of this picture. The girl is just beautiful with a far off glance kind of looking for something more. It's perfect.

This cover is just totally fierce! I love the intense stare from Calla along with the blood on the calla lilies, which ties in the main character's name. I also adore the glitter under her eyes and just the purple tint to the entire cover.

"Corrinne Corcoran’s upscale Manhattan life is perfectly on track—until her father announces he’s been laid off and she’s shipped off to Broken Spoke, Texas, to live with her grandparents. All alone in a big public school and forced to take a job shoveling manure, Corrinne is determined to get back to the glamorous life she’s supposed to be living. But as she grudgingly adjusts—making new friends and finding romance along the way—this city girl begins to realize that life without credit cards and shopping sprees may not be as bad as it seems...."

Doesn't this sound absolutely, positively amazing!? A city girl heads off to the middle of nowhere Texas and meets a country gentleman. Yes please!

You guys are so awesome! This means so much to me! I can't even believe it. It seriously feels like yesterday (cliche I know) that I only had forty followers and now 200?! Woah! I'm grateful for the amazing young adult book blogging community. I have met so many amazing people!

Then when checking my email tonight I was suddenly reminded by one of my sweet followers of May...

During my earlier blogging days I deserted my blog for six days because Prom was that week. An awesome follower (Hi Annie!) said that they would forgive me if I posted pictures. Instead of posting them I had agreed that if I reached 200 followers before 2011 I'd post a prom picture. I obviously didn't think I would achieve this, but a promise is a promise!

So here it is. My prom picture. *gag* My date is smoking hot though, right?! Psh, I totally went to prom with Alex Pettyfer (a.k.a. Jace Wayland from Mortal Instruments) HAHA! No, my real prom date was a total jerk, to put it nicely, so I replaced him with this studmuffin! Yum!

My dress's color was Pink Panther. Considering I bought it three days before prom I could have done worse. Oh, I didn't voluntarily wait until the last minute, I was asked on a Tuesday and the dance was Saturday... Ahh the joys of being a teenager!

Okay I'm done with the ramblings!

Thank you guys so very much! You rock!!

"I bet if you go through the rest of your life telling yourself, "I'm sparkling," you'll have a whole different energy and experience."

This book means a lot to mean. It is definitely a great story to read if you're feeling a little confused about where you're going in life. I adore the first quote and I love the simplicity of the second one.

I started my book blog in March of 2010, but I was terrible! I never posted and when I did post it was about the stupidest stuff. My first review was in July! Seriously it was ridcilous! Review: Nightshade by Andrea Cremer

Calla Tor has always known her destiny: After graduating from the Mountain School, she'll be the mate of sexy alpha wolf Ren Laroche and fight with him, side by side, ruling their pack and guarding sacred sites for the Keepers. But when she violates her masters' laws by saving a beautiful human boy out for a hike, Calla begins to question her fate, her existence, and the very essence of the world she has known. By following her heart, she might lose everything— including her own life. Is forbidden love worth the ultimate sacrifice?

When I first heard of Nightshade I thought it was going to be an ordinary paranormal romance, just like all the rest, so I put it off my radar. Than the awesome marketing campaign started. The calla lilies that were being sent to bloggers to announce Shay's Shadow Days youtube videos. Seriously how cool is that?! Then Andrea wrote a short story from Shay's point of view for amazon. I had to check this book out considering all the buzz!

I'm so thrilled I did! I love, love, love this book! Calla is definitely my all time favorite lead female. She's easy to relate to with her struggles of who she is and what path to choose. I found it extremely easy to put myself in her shoes. Oh and of course, Calla is a powerhouse! She's totally fierce and kicks major butt!

The guys... Well they are amazing! Andrea has both the dark mysterious boy and the sweet, loyal one. Ren's character is perfect. He has so many layers it's incredible. Shay is the polar opposite of Ren. He's more fun loving and care free. These characters bring so much depth to Nightshade.

There is two wolf packs in the story. Ren's and Calla's, who must unite together as one. Slowly they begin to spend more time together and it's just completely entertaining! Each pack mate brings a unique personality to the table that compliments the others so well! All the characters are hilarious. This definitely made me want a pack of my very own!

I had no trouble whatsoever getting into this book. Andrea Cremer put you smack in the middle of everything so there was never a dull moment. We are shown Calla's world from sentence one and I loved it.

The ending was perfect for a sequel. I really enjoyed how it ended and left questions (lots!) open for the following two books. I'm so bummed we have to wait until July to find out what happens!

Awesome Quote:
The floorboards squeaked as Ansel passed by my door again. I caught his nervous glance in my direction before he hurried down the hall.
"Ansel, I'm not the sun. Stop orbiting and get in here."

Characters: 5/5
Creativity: 5/5
Voice: 5/5
Plot: 5/5
Impact: 5/5
Overall: 5/5

I'm having Nightshade withdrawal symptoms. I loved living in Calla's world. Go pick up this book. I promise it's like nothing you ever read.
