Review: Torment by Lauren Kate

How many lives do you need to live before you find someone worth dying for? In the aftermath of what happened at Sword & Cross, Luce has been hidden away by her cursed angelic boyfriend, Daniel, in a new school filled with Nephilim, the offspring of fallen angels and humans. Daniel promises she will be safe here, protected from those who would kill her. At the school Luce discovers what the Shadows that have followed her all her life mean - and how to manipulate them to see into her other lives. Yet the more Luce learns about herself, the more she realizes that the past is her only key to unlocking her future...and that Daniel hasn't told her everything. What if his version of the past isn't actually the way things happened...what if Luce was really meant to be with someone else?

I had been waiting for what seemed like forever to get my hands on this book. The first time I read Fallen I found the story of reincarnated lovers that fell for each other over and over again very refreshing. However since there is a lot of knowledge about archangels you have to remember from the first book I had trouble following in a few parts. Keeping track of the angel laws and who was good or bad was a tad difficult for me.

Despite the fact that I probably needed to reread Fallen right before I picked up Torment didn't take away the fact that Daniel and Luce's relationship was well-developed and thought out. I really loved how it wasn't perfect all the time. They did have their struggles.

The supporting characters in this book were just completely awesome! I loved, loved, loved Luce's roommate Shelby. She was an outspoken and kind of crazy rebel that added comedy into tense situations. Another new addition to the series was the cute Miles, who I totally adore! I love a guy in a baseball hat, what can I say?! He sort of gives Daniel a run for his money and lets Luce see all the possibilities that are out there for her. These two guys are total opposites. Miles is more laid back while Daniel is constantly on edge, I just loved the dynamic!

I only had two minor problems with this book. The first one being what I mentioned above about too much prior knowledge from the first book. Second is Luce. I love leading female characters that are strong and independent. In my opinion she relied too much on everyone else to protect her and revolves her life too much around Daniel. Although she does get more of a backbone as the story goes on which makes me like Luce more than I did in Fallen. I just love it when characters grow into strong people!

I really enjoyed how Lauren Kate ended this installment. It was just enough to wrap up this part of our story, but still had me waiting to find out what happens next in the third book, Passion.

Amazing Quote:

"Sometimes beautiful things come into our lives out of nowhere. We can't always understand them, but we have to trust in them. I know you want to question everything, but sometimes it pays to just have a little faith."
-Lauren Kate (Torment)

I would definitely recommend that the next time you are at the bookstore you pick up Torment. It's a fast paced love story that will leave you wanting more.
