Review: If I Stay by Gayle Forman

Mia had everything: a loving family, a gorgeous, adoring boyfriend, and a bright future full of music and full of choices. Then, in an instant, almost all of that is taken from her. Caught between life and death, between a happy past and an unknowable future, Mia spends one critical day contemplating the one decision she has left—the most important decision she’ll ever make. Simultaneously tragic and hopeful, this is a romantic, riveting and ultimately uplifting story about memory, music, living, dying, loving.

If I Stay had been on my to be read pile for the longest time and I just kept pushing it back. I'm so grateful I picked up this book. Mia's voice is absolutely incredible I felt like I was there holding her hand the entire time. She is such a lovable character: intelligent, funny and passionate. This book has incredibly well developed characters. Even the minor roles had the perfect amount of description.

I usually don't like flashbacks, to me they're confusing and don't have a point. That was definitely not the case in If I Stay. Mia's flashbacks were extremely easy to follow and related to what was happening in the present. All of the important parts of her life were covered which helped me understand her decision.

I loved the characters Mom and Dad. They were the perfect example of how awesome being un-perfect is. They were outgoing and rebellious but most of all extremely loving. They brought out the best in each other. Not many YA books that I read have such a strong adult couple like this book. Mom was a great role model by being such a strong person who stuck to her beliefs.

This book brought tears to my eyes and sent chills down my spine. Okay I'll admit I'm a total sap, but there's something just so special about If I Stay. It's incredibly moving and just the overall message is amazing. I really enjoyed how the biggest battle in the book for Mia was with herself. Another thing that makes it such a great read is that it is for any age, gender or race. Everyone can relate. We have all had struggles in our lives and hard decisions to make.

The ending of If I Stay was incredible. It was more than I could have ever asked for. The story was tied up perfectly and left you wanting more (in a good way).

Amazing Quote:
"Sometimes you make choices in life and sometimes choice make you."

If I Stay has a little bit of everything thrown in: family, friends, love and loss. It was such an amazing roller coaster ride. I highly recommend that everyone read this. It's just simply incredible. I cannot wait to get my hands on the sequel, Where She Went, that comes out in 2011

  4. I enjoyed this one too, and flashbacks can confuse and annoy me a lot of times- but this was pulled off really well.

  6. I loved this book and I thought the flashbacks were done well. I love that Mia had a pretty happy life - it makes the book easier to read, because you have a break from the horror of Mia's present but it makes the book even sadder b/c you know what she's lost.
    Alison Can Read
